Blowout Preventer (BOP) Explained

The blowout preventer is a stack of heavy-duty valves at the wellhead — the last line of defense against an uncontrolled release of pressure during drilling.

A blowout preventer (BOP) is a stack of large, high-pressure valves installed on the wellhead during drilling. Its purpose is to control "kicks" — sudden influxes of formation fluid into the wellbore — during drilling, tripping pipe and running casing. The BOP is the last line of defense against a blowout, capable of sealing the well in seconds.

How a BOP controls a kick

When higher-pressure formation fluids enter the wellbore, the crew detects the kick and closes the BOP to seal the well. With the well shut in, the influx can be safely circulated out and the mud weight adjusted before drilling resumes. Because a kick can escalate to a blowout within minutes, the BOP must close reliably and fast.

Ram and annular preventers

Stacking both types provides redundancy and flexibility for different downhole situations.
