A mud pump is a large, high-pressure pump that drives the rig's drilling-fluid circulation system. It pushes drilling fluid ("mud") down the inside of the drill string, out through the bit, and back up the annulus to the surface. This continuous circulation is essential to drilling a well safely and efficiently.

What circulation accomplishes
Circulating mud does several jobs at once. It carries rock cuttings up and out of the wellbore, cools and lubricates the bit, and exerts hydrostatic pressure that helps control downhole formation pressures. Without effective circulation, cuttings would pack around the bit, the bit would overheat, and the well could become unstable.
After returning to surface, mud passes through solids-control equipment — starting with shale shakers — that screens out drilled cuttings so the cleaned fluid can be pumped back downhole.
Solids control and the mud loop
When mud returns to the surface laden with cuttings, it enters the solids-control system. The first stage is the shale shaker, a vibrating screen that separates drilled cuttings from the fluid. The cleaned mud is then conditioned and returned to the pump's suction, completing a closed loop. Maintaining the right mud properties and a clean fluid is critical to drilling performance and well control.
